The Madam York Collective is a four-piece band, formed around three years ago and based between Ballarat and Melbourne. Influenced by artists in the vein of Tom Waits, Aretha Franklin, Gillian Welch, Renee Geyer, and Daniel Lanois, MYC plays a collection of covers and originals which cut across a wide range of genres and decades, from guitar-based rock through to blues, funk and even an occasional hint of country. The band comprises of Angela Crebbin on electric guitars and vocals; Jake Mahar, on lead guitar; Marty Claassen on bass and Adam Spinks on drums. MYC’s name derives from a street which, during the Ballarat gold-rush era, was renamed after prominent prospector, James Esmond, wished to disassociate his name with the debauched goings on occurring there. Esmond St, named after him, was later renamed York Street after a local brothel operator, Madam York. With two of the band’s members having grown up around this street, this humorous legend and the spirit of strong-willed woman inspired the name of the band.
