Eating in the Hepburn Shire
Its not just about good food and wine in the Hepburn Shire. We love a great story behind the produce. Speak to anyone serving or selling this regions produce and they will tell you a story bathed in history, serendipity and good old fashioned hard work.
From casual dining in lovely local cafes to fancy affairs in historic hotels, you can have your cake and eat it too. Fish and chips by a lake, picnics in gardens or an eight course degustation in a private dining room, you can experience it all in the Hepburn Shire
Cosmopolitan, charming and full of local produce, not to mention the local identities that produce and serve the food
Wombat Forest Vineyard
Our family owned vineyard established in 1997 is nestled on the edge of the Wombat State Forest with its rich diversity of bird and animal life all of whom are partial to grapes. An elevation of 600 metres, abundant natural springs and rich volcanic soil, all combine to create a unique niche for viticulture and wombats. Our wine displays classic, cool climate characteristics derived from an extended ripening period. Our grapes are hand pruned and picked and our reds are matured in French Oak. We have a cosy tasting room and courtyard with extensive views of the Wombat Forest. We pride ourselves on using environmentally friendly practices.
Take a walk around picturesque Lake Daylesford and take in the sights and sounds of nature. A short stroll from the town centre, Lake Daylesford offers something to keep everyone happy.
Children love bird spotting and the playground is always a hit. Why not hire a paddle boat for an hour or two or spend the day and utilise the BBQ facilities.
You will find a cafe and restaurant right on the shores of the lake and many more activities. Don’t forget to taste the famous mineral water at Wombat Flat Mineral Spring and Central Springs Reserve.
Lake Daylesford is a manmade lake, originally a site of gold diggings, then later a Chinese market garden. The construction of the lake began in 1927 and was and still is used for many recreational activities.
Swiss Mountain Hotel
Swiss Mountain Hotel established in 1865 is the oldest licensed weatherboard hotel in Victoria, and one of regional Victoria's oldest licensed hotels.
Come in and meet the locals - try some local and Victorian beers or a glass local of wine, or even coffee and cake.
What about food - got something for everybody. From the pub classic to modern bistro menu to the best local beef we can find.
Here at Daylesford Cider we produce a range of multi-award winning ciders made using the 17 varieties of English-heritage listed cider apples we grow organically on the farm just outside Daylesford. The styles of cider range from traditional ‘still’ with an almost bone-dry palate, through to lightly carbonated and sweeter ones.
It only seems fitting that our ciders are sold from an English style Tavern cellar door. The Tavern offers a cosy setting in Winter and in Summer people can kick back in the courtyard and landscaped gardens and enjoy the lawn games.
The cellar door is open 7 days a week serving our range of ciders to drink in or take home, as well as local and regional beers, wines & soft drinks. The kitchen is open for lunch Friday-Monday, offering a modest menu to accompany a cider or two.
We host live music, private parties, weddings, food events and more, so please get in touch to see how we can help. A Cider Makers Tour can be arranged with notice. See you soon, Cheers!
