Clunes Booktown

Clunes is a Booktown all year round and offers a FREE series of writer talks on the third Sunday of the month – known as Booktown on Sunday. The charming Goldfields village of Clunes is internationally recognised as a Booktown. It is a hub of ideas and the arts… along with a disproportionately high number of bookshops.

Each year, an army of local volunteers and a small team of staff, host the annual Clunes Booktown Festival, which attracts 18,000 people to enjoy the most amazing whole town bookshop in the world. Think author talks, workshops, live entertainment, a kids village, and good food.

  • Booktown on Sundays occurs the 3rd Sunday of each month. The annual Booktown event is in May each year.

Calembeen Park Creswick

Calambeen Park has two beautiful lakes that are home to birdlife and displays of waterlilies. It was once the town’s Chinese camp in the goldmining days, now you can visit the park for walking, cycling, swimming, fishing and a favourite of locals and visitors alike, the now restored dive tower.

Calambeen Park is home to the public art piece ‘My Dearest’, which can be found by taking the walking trail around the lake.

Mount Franklin Reserve

Known as Lalgambook by the Djadja Wurrung people, Mt Franklin is a small volcanic crater that offers ideal place for a picnic or basic camping set amongst huge conifers and deciduous trees. Mount Franklin is a fine example of a breached scoria cone. The breach, through which the road now enters the crater, is thought to have been caused by a flow of lava breaking through the crater rim. Lava from Mount Franklin and other volcanoes in the area filled valleys and buried the goldbearing streams that became the renowned ‘deep leads’ of the gold mining era.

You can camp for short stays at Mt Franklin which is also suitable for caravans and motor homes on a first come first served basis. No fees apply. Toilets, fireplaces and washing water are provided.

For up-to-date park information including any changed conditions, visit the Parks Victoria webpage or call 13 19 63.
