Mineral Springs
Quench your thirst for rejuvenation in Hepburn Shire, where natural springs rise to the surface laden with minerals such as magnesium, sodium, potassium and iron. Victoria boasts no less than 39 publicly accessible mineral springs – many of which are dotted across Daylesford, Hepburn Springs, and surrounding parts of the Central Highlands.
As you explore the region, keep an eye out for the pumps that mark the existence of a tapped spring below ground. Pump the handle several times to get the water flowing, before having a taste. Rooted in the traditional lands and cultures of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, and Wadawurrung peoples, sipping the mineral-rich water became particularly popular with visitors during the Victorian era. Today, visitors perhaps a little more tentative, but no less intrigued by these shimmering natural features of the landscape.
In Hepburn Shire, springs can be found in Daylesford, Hepburn Springs, Glenlyon, and Lyonville. Just beyond Hepburn Shire, you'll find springs in Kyneton, Blackwood, Vaughan, Spargo Creek, Ballan, and as far south as Geelong. Water quality monitoring ensures you can sample the natural mineral water safely, however it is untreated and should not be used as your routine drinking water source.
